Helvellyn

Helvellyn, Lake District

The highest mountain of the Helvellyn range and a wonderful place worth visiting.

After our trip to Old Man of Coniston we felt in love with Lake District and decided to go back but in a different region. We camped at Windermere campsite, a Camping and Caravanning Club site. The site is fabulous with clean facilities and the staff was very nice and helpful.

I have asked few friends and looked on internet which hiking trails are around Windermere and decided to go hiking at Helvellyn as it was only half an hour drive from the campsite.

Helvellyn is the highest peak of the Helvellyn range and the route included Striding Edge, Helvellyn, Nethermost Pike, Dollywaggon Pike, Grisedale Tarn and St Sunday Crag and Birks.

We started the route from the car park vis-a-vis Patterdale Hotel. The payment for this car park is at the Reception as there are no payment machines.

When we started the trail the weather was rainy and foggy so we couldn’t see the top of the mountain very well. On the other hand it was an advantage when we walked on the top of Striding Edge as I couldn’t see down and I’ve managed to cross it and overcome my fear of heights.

The way we did the map we couldn’t do the last two peaks as we had to cross a river which was large and deep at the time due to heavy rain.

At the end of the day, it was a fantastic day full of challenges and we felt a little bit tired but happy. We completed 11 miles of hiking and made priceless memories

I was so glad to see Helvellyn voted No. 1 (2020) of British’s Favourite Walks Top 100 on ITV 1. We are looking forward to go camping in Lakes and hiking Helvellyn again.
